About me
Thursday, 16 September 2010
My name is Gabi Huiber and I am an applied economist. I live in Durham, NC. I went to Clemson for graduate school (PhD, 2003). My dissertation was on using experimental evidence for measuring the value of a brand. My main finding was that UPS did the right thing when, after it acquired Mail Boxes, Etc., it decided to change its name to The UPS Store. I had a very unique data set, can you tell?
I used to work in, then manage the Economic Analysis Group at the UPS headquarters in Atlanta, an in-house applied econometrics shop in charge of estimating marginal costs in the various operations, from residential delivery to international air cargo. On the side, we did ad-hoc things like modeling the risk of on-the-job injuries for UPS drivers, or the job turnover of the package sorters. Then I worked briefly for RTI Health Solutions, a subsidiary of RTI International, trying my hand at conjoint analysis and realizing that I was pretty bad at it.
My next attempt at something new and different was a collaboration with Mather Economics, LLC of Atlanta. We used survival analysis to help daily newspapers optimize their subscription fee structure and improve subscriber retention. That was the main job, but there was also a bit of work helping state lotteries optimize their game portfolios, and the occasional environmental impact assessment gig. All of those were a lot of fun, which lasted for three productive years, between 2007 and 2010.
Since 2001 I have been making my living by deploying increasingly clear, robust, and scalable Stata code for solving problems that have econometric solutions. They can be found in product pricing, risk management, quantitative marketing, program evaluation or clinical research. Stata is still my favorite data analysis software, but I am guessing that I will no longer use it daily. My new employer has a partnership with SAS. I expect that I will still design and prototype solutions with Stata, but they will be implemented in SAS for clients who like them that way.
